Cars are important in the United States. Without a car
most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn’t
feel really poor when he has a car. Henry Ford was the man who first started
making cars in large numbers. He probably didn’t know how much the car was
going to affect American culture. The car made the United States a nation on
wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today.
There are three main reasons the car became so popular
in the United States. First of all, the country is a huge one and Americans
like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest
form of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a
lot of money.
The second reason cars are popular is the fact that
the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of
public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the
United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good
system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used
frequently.
The third reason is the most important one, though.
The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans
don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to
have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule
their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for
Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation.
The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so
much gas.

A few years ago it was common to speak of a generation
gap between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not
respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not
understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap
suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long
time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the
opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In a more
traditional society, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the
same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and like,
and often to continue the family jobs. In our society, young people often
travel great distances for their education, move out of the family at an early
age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose
jobs different from those of their parents.
In our society, parents often expect their children to
do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all
the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap
between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with
each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our
society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional
culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge, but in our society the
knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to
live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.
No doubt, the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to
come.
